A Colt is my Passport (1967)

Image
I've said countless times in 5 years that I'm not just a horror & action guy. I like to expand my horizons, try different genres, watch films from overseas. I wasn't that guy years ago when I started movie collecting and I regret that. The film snob in me wouldn't dare watch a black and white film, or anything "old". Anything horror, anything action, I just collected and collected and collected. I've really as of late, tried to expand my horizons a lot more and watch more films that I wouldn't have watched as a teenager. A Colt is my Passport was a film I've never heard of, never knew it existed until I read an article about it on Joblo.com and of course the film is being remade as if Hollywood is forging new ground with this. I've sourced a copy, watched it and A Colt is my Passport is not a bad action flick from Japan. The only issue I had with it is the pacing in some scenes. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the film immensely. It'...

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera (2025)

Image
Back in March of this year, I checked out Den of Thieves and I did enjoy it for what it was. With the way the film ended, I knew a sequel was coming. That's the problem nowadays with Hollywood. Not everything needs a sequel, prequel, remake, or reboot. Sometimes a one off is good and it makes you think about what you just watched. In the case of Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, I thought it was an okay sequel which was a little too long which resulted in issues with pacing. The script, okay, but a little weak and acting not bad. Action movies do not need to be over 2 hours as in my opinion it's just extending it's welcome. I do like Gerard Butler in his action roles, I've seen a lot of his stuff but he's nowhere near the likes of Van Damme, Seagal or Stallone. Action flicks were made better in the 80's & 90's and had better pacing and a coherent story which you know was done many times before. The acting may have been bad, but at least it had enough cheese to...

Deathmaster (1972)

Image
Deathmaster is without a doubt, one of the cheesiest vampire movies I've ever seen, it's also one of the most badly acted films I've ever seen and I've seen my fair share of horror films and bad acting over the years. Now, in spite of all that, Deathmaster is a fun little flick from the drive-in movie days of the 1970's. It's no Count Yorga that's for sure and for those who know of that character, one would think that it may be the third installment of that series because of Robert Quarry playing the vampire once again. But it's not. I first saw this flick on satellite TV back in my teenage days and didn't remember much about it other than it being a vampire flick. Having watched it now, I could write about this commentary a little more better. The acting, if you want to call it acting, is bad, full of hippie dialogue spliced in with whatever marijuana was smoked during the filming. The script is terrible, but for some reason, the pacing is good. I g...

Bring Her Back (2025)

Image
Danny & Michael Phillippou the directors behind Bring Her Back made their first film titled "Talk to Me" which I didn't like. I found the pacing to be slow, the acting terrible, and the story weak. I initially had heard they made another film and was very hesitant on checking it out because of Talk to Me. Well, Bring her Back is in my opinion a better film than Talk to Me pacing wise, but on a whole, it's very graphic & crazy. Acting was pretty good especially in Sally Hawkin's performance as the unhinged mother. Script is slightly better, but it's not enough for me to give it a 3/5. Pacing wise, it is better than Talk to Me as that was my main concern going into this as I didn't want Bring Her Back to be jumping all over and have me lose focus. I don't consider the film horror, it's more dramatic with spurts of horror added in. Is Bring Her Back a better movie? Yes. Will I see more of the director's works? Maybe, if they improve on the...

Your Host (2025)

Image
I got a question for you horror fans out there. Do you ever just watch a horror film whether it be paranormal, slasher, or found footage and then comes along a character who's written so horribly in the script that you can't wait for him or her to be killed off by whatever's chasing them?  Anyone?....Anyone? Well, if you come up with an answer, let me know in the comments. Until then, what can you expect from a movie like Your Host? For starters, the film itself has been done before numerous times but with an exception. The main characters are written in the script as arrogant, cocky, and downright terrible people that the moment they came on screen and started talking, I hated them with a passion. There's so much toxicity in this movie's dialogue that it makes the cringe level go up dramatically. The main reason why I wanted to see this film was for Jackie Earle Haley. He's a good character actor who's done some good work especially in his version of A Nig...

Beast of War (2025)

Image
It seems like every year there's an abundance of shark films that get released mostly around the summer time rarely ever in the fall trying to be the next Jaws. I'll make this short & sweet. No shark film will ever take the mantle that is Jaws. Not even Jaws 2, 3, or even *shudder Jaws 4. Anyways, I can appreciate a good shark film every now & then when done properly and not cheap garbage. Beast of War is one of the good ones. For once it's not a bunch of typical teenagers on a beach, vacation, or scuba diving and are hunted by sharks. I say Beast of War is good, but it isn't without it's faults. The first 30 minutes of the film we meet our cast of characters who become potential shark bait doing basic training or whatever of the sort. It's when they are on the raft, the action takes place. Script isn't bad, but could have trimmed a little bit of the 30 minutes of the basic training stuff in the beginning. Acting isn't bad, it's better than ...

Vicious (2025)

Image
Vicious was a film I had doubts on because I wasn't sure how to react to it after seeing the trailer. I figured it would be a typical run of the mill horror film that was dumped for streaming because Paramount had no hope for it succeeding in a theatrical release. After watching the film, I've come to the conclusion that the executives at Paramount are not all bright when it comes to deciding what's meant for streaming or theatrical. I truly believe that Vicious may have done well theatrically had it gone that route. When you think horror, you think paranormal or slasher. When I think of Vicious, I think a thriller with moments that turn into horror. The movie itself is really good. Story wasn't bad, although it's been done before, pacing was alright and acting was was good. Kind of hard to believe that after the crap that was Apartment 7A, Paramount+ rebounded with Vicious. 3/5

John Candy: I Like Me (2025)

Image
Growing up as a teenager, comedies rarely made me laugh unless it had John Candy, Steve Martin or any of the SCTV or original SNL cast, then I'd be laughing up a storm. I've been a fan of John Candy for many many years, have all his movies on DVD with the exception of a few (Brewster's Millions & Volunteers) and watching this beautiful documentary about the man himself gave me a whole new perspective on him. He was the man that made you laugh, made you cry in anything he did. For Candy, he wasn't just an actor, he was someone that you could relate to and I feel I can relate myself to him in being a nice person to everyone around me. I'm a huge huge fan of Planes, Trains & Automobiles and that film alone really showcases John's talent as an actor and I would have loved to have seen him do dramatic roles or maybe even a thriller but one will never know. I rarely tear up when watching a movie but some scenes did make me cry especially watching his funeral....

V/H/S Halloween (2025)

Image
Last year I did a commentary on the V/H/S franchise and while I truly believe the first two and maybe Viral were the best, the later sequels dipped in terms of writing and quality. The main problem with the series is the writing. Anthology films shouldn't be difficult to write and I can't understand as to why this franchise has trouble with writing. Onto the stories of this latest V/H/S installment. Wrap-Around: Diet Phantasma - The main story of V/H/S Halloween is set in 1982 where a soda company's taste test for their new drink Diet Phantasma is given to a bunch of test subjects with crazy results. This segment alone is amusing, but to me it doesn't make sense how it leads into the segments itself. Fair, but not great. 2/5. Coochie Coochie Coo - Teenagers on their last Halloween before college end up at the home of Mommy who's been said to kidnap children on Halloween night. This segment isn't bad for what it is. Writing is okay and acting is meh. My only comp...

Scurry (2024)

Image
I love a good creature feature every now and then, and the fact Scurry was being advertised as a creature feature filmed entirely in one shot... Well, I was curious enough to check it out. While the plot was indeed interesting and I swear I suffer from claustrophobia as I can't handle movies where people are trapped in confined spaces and have to crawl to survive. Scurry has maybe a couple of issues that I've noticed. The script could have been tightened up as it resulted in pacing issues which was due to it being filmed in one continuous shot. The film is 100 minutes which to me is a no-no. A movie like Scurry should be roughly 85-90 minutes tops. The CGI of the spiders looked wonky to me. I can understand that practical effects would have been a issue given the background of the movie. To me, the spider effects in Scurry, don't scream scary, but laughable. Much like Jaws where you don't see the shark as much, you don't see the spiders as much which saves it from g...
