Obsession (2026)

Image
I've first heard about Obsession a few months ago. It was being hyped like crazy at various festivals and after the wife & I finally checked it out. We can agree that Obsession is a batshit insane movie. There's some gross out shock moments that I felt a bit sick to my stomach afterwards. Perhaps it's old age creeping up on me. I don't usually jump when watching horror films as I know what to expect, but there were a few instances where I did jump and it was mostly in unexpected moments which I will not spoil here. The idea of a wish gone wrong has been done many times before, most notably with the Wishmaster franchise. The script for Obsession is very good. While there are some moments that I consider to be over the top, the acting is pretty good along with it's pacing. Overall, Obsession is one of the best horror films that I've seen this year and I'll end it by saying, be careful what wish you for! I'm Jeff Roman. 4/5

Itch! (2024)

Image
Itch is an interesting kind of zombie flick where you maybe see one or a few zombies max. It's just people scratching themselves to death and turning into zombies. I thought that was an interesting premise. But I feel it could have been a little better if the plot was developed a little more. I'm a zombie guy and anytime a zombie flick pops my way, I know I got to check it out. Despite the plot which I found kind of cool, the movie doesn't work for me in the traditional zombie sense. Maybe as a monster movie, but not zombies. The script could have been better. Acting is so-so and pacing, decent. Overall, if you feel the need to scratch, then watch itch. Hopefully that helps. I'm Jeff Roman. 2/5

Apex (2026)

Image
A lot of these Netflix movies that are released weekly can be hit or miss. But Apex is a decent little thriller that really had me interested in the locations of where it was filmed. Australia has a beautiful sections of woods. Perhaps good enough for a Friday the 13th sequel... hint...hint... Anyways, Apex has a good script, acting. But the pacing is a little sluggish at times. I love the fact that it sort of turned into a horror film in the second half. Overall, Apex is one of decent ones from Netflix's weekly flicks. Here's hoping for more summer fun. I'm Jeff Roman. 2 1/2/5

The Cable Guy (1996)

Image
Dumb & Dumber, Ace Ventura, & The Mask made Jim Carrey a household name in 1994. When he did The Cable Guy in 1996, Jim shifted away from zany comedy to dark comedy and the results are not bad. Truth be told, I enjoyed this film much more than audiences back in 1996. I think it's interesting to see comedians try their hands at different genres instead of being pigeonholed in the same role. If Robin Williams can shift away to dark thrillers then I think Jim Carrey & any other comedian can do the same. The script for Cable Guy while dark, is pretty good. The acting from everyone is good as well. Pacing is very strong.  Overall, The Cable Guy is a fun dark film that doesn't reinvent the wheel for thrillers, but it's a good watch. I'm Jeff Roman. 3/5

Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997)

Image
There's a saying in Hollywood, When a film is successful, expect a sequel. Whether it's good or bad, often times they aren't needed and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation is just a bad sequel altogether. The original Mortal Kombat is a fun bad movie full of cheese with enough action that kept me smiling. Annihilation is just a bad movie with hokey special effects and with a terrible script to boot. The first film had some hokey effects but I let it slide because it was of the time. Here, it's just laughingly bad. Perhaps if the original cast (A few appear) were in this movie then maybe it would have been better.  Overall, I think a better script would have benefited Mortal Kombat: Annihilation or maybe they could have amped up the cheese factor a lot more. I'm Jeff Roman 1/5

Mortal Kombat (1995)

I must confess, I've never played the Mortal Kombat video game but I've seen various walkthroughs to know what they're all about. Mortal Kombat along with Street Fighter are in my opinion the cheesiest movies based on video games of the 1990's. Everything from script, acting and special effects is downright cheesy. That's not to say it's all that bad, it is a fun movie. I feel that it's extremely difficult to make a movie based on a video game due to interference and I feel where Mortal Kombat suffers is it's rating. I'm aware that the PG-13 rating is for teenagers going to see the film. But after seeing many gaming reviews and walkthroughs, Mortal Kombat should definitely be an R rating. It wouldn't be a loss for the studio as teenagers sneak into R-rated movies these days. Overall, Mortal Kombat is the cheesiest of the cheese and don't get me started on it's sequel. I'm Jeff Roman. 3/5

Hokum (2026)

Image
A lot of horror movies have that ahole character that you just despise so much that by the end of the movie you expect them to either A: Be killed off or B: Have some sort of redemption that they change their ways. I'm not going to tell you what the answer is here as you need to see the movie for yourself. Hokum in my opinion is a great movie that has more thriller elements with some horror sequences added in. I must admit that when me & the wife saw the trailer, we were initially skeptical as it didn't explain much and expected it to be a slow burn. While there may have been some confusing moments, Hokum isn't a slow burn at all. By the end of the film, we were able to piece it together on what we thought. The best thing that came from this film is the performance by Adam Scott. He plays an ahole quite well that the moment you hear & see the arrogance from his character, you'd pretty much would be thinking exactly as I said in the beginning. Overall, trailers m...
