V/H/S Halloween (2025)
Last year I did a commentary on the V/H/S franchise and while I truly believe the first two and maybe Viral were the best, the later sequels dipped in terms of writing and quality. The main problem with the series is the writing. Anthology films shouldn't be difficult to write and I can't understand as to why this franchise has trouble with writing. Onto the stories of this latest V/H/S installment.
Wrap-Around: Diet Phantasma - The main story of V/H/S Halloween is set in 1982 where a soda company's taste test for their new drink Diet Phantasma is given to a bunch of test subjects with crazy results. This segment alone is amusing, but to me it doesn't make sense how it leads into the segments itself. Fair, but not great. 2/5.
Coochie Coochie Coo - Teenagers on their last Halloween before college end up at the home of Mommy who's been said to kidnap children on Halloween night. This segment isn't bad for what it is. Writing is okay and acting is meh. My only complaint on this is the story takes place in 2009. Who was using a VHS camcorder in 2009? I thought this film was called V/H/S and not Digital. A not bad start to the stories. 2/5.
Ut Supra Sic Infra - A massacre at some sort of cult or event has left only one survivor and the police take him back to the crime scene to figure out what happened. This story made no sense whatsoever. I will give credit that the actors did okay given what they had but the story itself wasn't good and as I mentioned made no sense. A cursed phone... Really? 0/5.
Fun Size - Four young adults trick or treating go to a house with a bowl of candy with instructions to take one per person. As adults usually do, they ignore the warning and it leads to shocking results. This story is more comedic than horror. A slight improvement over the last story, but not by much. 2/5
Kidprint - A video store that produces kidprint videos which helps police in finding missing children finds itself involved with what made the videos altogether. It's okay, not great and the home video quality of the kids itself came off as more creepy then fun. 1/5.
Home Haunt: A family's yearly tradition of a huanted house goes wrong as a cursed record brings the attraction to life. If I had to pick the best story out of this installment, it would be this one. Funny, gory, stupid and a lot of fun. 3/5.
As my father put it, the series has run it's course. The writing gets more and more terrible with each installment. It's not that hard to write an anthology film. Just make it fun and don't deviate from the stories. Films like Creepshow, Tales from the Crypt, etc had good writing and made sense. The first couple of the films in the franchise, sure they didn't have the greatest of writing, but they were fun and made sense. You could do a Easter version, Thanksgiving version, whatever. But you need better writers to make a good film and I think they should stay away from this franchise for awhile until we get some good writing.
2/5
