A Better Tomorrow 2 (1987)
You ever hear of the saying "Never bring a knife to a gun fight?" I ask this because there's a very awesome moment in A Better Tomorrow 2 during the climatic shoot out where one of the heroes kills a bunch of bad guys with a samurai sword and I got myself to thinking "That was a very cool moment. I wish the rest of the film was like this". A Better Tomorrow 2 is a decent sequel to the original film, a violent Hong Kong flick that's full of crazy fight sequences with a ton of blood carnage. In the sequel however, it feels more watered down and not as exciting. There are some pretty interesting action sequences, but what stood out for me was the final shoot out. It was an action fan's delight that had me smiling. If the rest of the film had that level of action then I would have been a little more positive speaking about A Better Tomorrow 2. Before going into this movie, I read up some info and found that John Woo and the producers had some issues behind the scenes which resulted in massive cuts to the film which would explain why some of the sequences felt a little clunky to me. I'm sure there was a good script for A Better Tomorrow 2 but, with what I just mentioned above, I feel the movie was let down. Acting is pretty good for the most part, but there was a moment that made me laugh where Chow Yun Fat's character is being threatened by an Italian gangster. Chow's English dubbing is so bad that I couldn't help but ask myself, "am I watching a comedy?" Remind me to never have fried rice. The pacing is let down by it's script and editing. Overall, it was decent, but not great.
