Happy Gilmore 2 (2025)
Positives:
- It was great seeing Adam Sandler return to his iconic role. He hasn't lost his edge...yet.
- A lot of the callbacks to the original were amusing and garnered a chuckle out of me.
- It was great hearing some of the music from the original film here. But I'm slightly disappointed that they didn't use the same music in the credits which I think would have made it a pure nostalgic trip.
Negatives:
- The original film was 93 minutes, while the sequel is 117 minutes. I think it should have stayed around the same time as I found the pacing to be a little slow at times. The script wasn't bad but I could tell the bloated runtime contributed to some of the slowness.
- The CGI on Adam Sandler at the beginning was terrible. I get that they were trying to make Sandler look "younger" or they mapped his face on to someone else but I didn't like that all that much.
- While I said I did enjoy the callbacks to the original film. I feel like the flashbacks contributed to the slow pace. I get it, you're trying to tell people, hey, remember when this happened in the original film? Yeah, I get it, but it was too much for me.
In my opinion, sequels to classic comedies rarely work for me as they do nothing but bring down what made the original a classic. Happy Gilmore is a classic comedy from the early days of Sandler and I think that fans who grew up with Sandler in the 90's will love this but I think it's best to lower your expectations when watching. Happy Gilmore 2 will never come close to the original, but, for what's it worth I still enjoyed it.
