The Mummy (2026)

Image
Going into The Mummy, I had some reservations on it. After watching it, I can safely say that The Mummy is a fun little movie. But it shouldn't have been called The Mummy as there are sequences in this film that make a ton of references to Evil Dead. Now, maybe it's because Lee Cronin came off of directing Evil Dead Rise and passed on Evil Dead Burn to direct this, I feel that he may be showing signs of regret on passing it. The script would have been pretty good if it was called something else as it deals more about demons then an actual mummy itself and my other qualm was the runtime. A horror movie like this shouldn't be 2 hours. 100 minutes is the max, maybe a little more. Despite that, I did enjoy the film for what it had to offer. To me, it seems like this Evil Dead in Egypt. I'm Jeff Roman. 2 1/2/5

Strangeland (1998)

Image
Strangeland is a typical 90's slasher that doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it's a decent fun movie. The script is pretty good, typical of what you'd expect of a horror movie coming out of the 90's. Acting also good. I've always said that musicians turned actors really should stick to music. But Dee Snider hams it up well as the villain. Overall, Strangeland is decent, nothing more. I'm Jeff Roman. 3/5

Rabisu: Curse of the Demon (2026)

Image
Rabisu: Curse of the Demon is a typical found footage movie that when you've seen one found footage movie, you've pretty much seen them all. At least, it's not about the paranormal this time around. It seems like all found footage movies have the same plot regarding the paranormal and I'm sitting here thinking they should try something different. Use a monster or something. Rabisu succeeds in trying to be different with it's creature effects, but it's a typical type of found footage film with abysmal acting featuring GenZ dialogue, and the typical line of "we have to film everything".  Overall, Rabisu doesn't re-invent the wheel, but I give it credit for being fun. I'm Jeff Roman. 2 1/2/5

Deadly Prey (1987)

Image
Rambo: First Blood is considered by many action movie aficionados to be the best 80's action flick of all time. But during the mid to late 80's, Rambo knock-offs started coming out like hot cakes. I should know because in my 20's, I started searching high & low for the worst Rambo knock-offs and I've amassed a big collection. One movie in my personal opinion is one of the best Rambo knock-offs of all time, Deadly Prey. This movie is so hilariously bad in it's acting that where it fails in acting, it makes up for it in the action scenes. The script is craptuclar that you can see the cheese on the screen. You got to love the direct to video era as they always seem to churn out the worst. All in all, if you want to have a bad movie night, then look no further with Deadly Prey. It's bad, but it's the good kind of bad. I'm Jeff Roman 3/5

Skyscraper (1996)

Image
Die Hard is in my opinion one of the greatest action films of all time. But with the success of Die Hard came other movies that have the same premise and tried to do it's own thing and I can tell you that I've looked around finding these knock offs since my 20's and Skyscraper was one of those films that caught my eye. I'll start up this brief commentary by saying that Skyscraper is bad and not just bad, but bad. and it's because of the late Anna Nicole Smith. Her acting in the film is horrible beyond belief. I couldn't take her seriously as someone trying to rescue hostages in a building. Despite that, Skyscraper is hands down a Die Hard knock-off from the plot itself to both characters being involved in law enforcement. Overall, Skyscraper is a cheesy film but it's definitely not one of the good knock-offs. I'm Jeff Roman. 2/5

Virtual Combat (1995)

Image
Let it be known that the 1990's had some of the greatest action stars. While Stallone, Van Damme, Arnold, & Seagal dominated the theatrical market, people like Jeff Speakman, Don "The Dragon" Wilson, & many more dominated the direct to video market. The films were cheaply made, but you can see the care put into it. Virtual Combat is a movie that is so cheesy in not just it's action sequences but in it's dialogue. Scripts for this type of film have been done many times with various actors. It's always something when you hear dialogue that's laughable and getting knocked out over a roundhouse kick. Overall Virtual Combat is a movie that you'd find in your video store back in the day, rent it, grab a bowl of popcorn and just sit back and watch The Dragon kick some ass. I'm Jeff Roman. 3/5

The Firm (1993)

Image
I think that Tom Cruise is a fantastic actor regardless of his beliefs in Scientology. I've always said that I try to not focus on an actor's personal life and focus more on their acting. That's what I'm into and I think people should not care as much as what actors are like off camera. I've always enjoyed Tom's work whether it's in the Mission Impossible films for doing all those crazy stunts and or the films that don't get talked about all that much anymore. The Firm in my opinion is a good little thriller with a strong script, pacing and great acting performances all around. I'd love to see Tom do more films like this as it really does showcase more of his acting instead of relying on stunts. Overall, I love a good thriller film whenever it shows up on my radar and The Firm is definitely one of the best. I'm Jeff Roman 4/5

Star Hunter (1996)

Image
Star Hunter is the definition of a bad B movie but a lot of fun. If I had a chance to go back in time to my local video store in 1996, I'd be renting this along with any other B movies. The plot is ludicrous, the acting is terrible  with the exception of Roddy McDowall who I have no idea how someone convinced him to be in this.  But out of everyone in the cast, he put in a decent performance. Star Hunter came to me via a Facebook post regarding a troubled production which I'd be more interested in hearing about it. Overall, a movie like this is best seen on a rainy afternoon. I'm Jeff Roman. 2/5

Death Line (1972)

Image
I like a good British horror movie every now & then whether it's old or new. I find that the British are very Shakespearian when it comes to their acting. It must feel like they're in a play instead of a movie when they're acting. After a cool opening in Death Line aka Raw Meat, the movie didn't turn out as to what I expected. I found it to be slow, boring, and incoherent. I'm sure there was a good script somewhere in Death Line. I believe it was muddled by it's terrible pacing. Acting especially from Halloween's Donald Pleasence is pretty good for the most part. Overall, Death Line may be a disappointment, but it won't stop me for seeking out more British horror films of the 70's to check out. I'm Jeff Roman. 1/5

Thrash (2026)

Image
Netflix's latest Friday flick is Thrash and let me tell you, it's a decent shark flick which when you've seen one shark film, you've pretty see them all. I'll give the filmmakers credit for not setting it on a beach this time around. The script is typical of what you'd expect from a shark film, acting is pretty good. Pacing is alright. Overall, Thrash is no Jaws, but it's passable fare. I'm Jeff Roman. 2/5

Bone Keeper (2026)

Image
Bone Keeper is nothing more then your typical monster in a cave type of film. I kept getting The Descent vibes while watching which I believe it's because both films are British. The script is typical of what you'd expect from this type of film. Acting is okay, not great, passable and way better pacing then Horizon. Overall, Bone Keeper isn't a great monster flick, but it's sure as hell better then Horizon. I'm Jeff Roman. 2 1/2/5

Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter One (2024)

Image
Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter One is beautifully shot, I really liked seeing some of the locations and it also has some great acting performances. But there's one big problem. The film is severely disjointed and hard to follow. To me, it seems like Horizon was pulling a Pulp Fiction jumping back & fourth to different stories which made the plot very confusing, Costner doesn't even show up until the one hour mark and that was a disappointment. The script is a mess along with it's pacing and I have no interest in checking out part 2 should it ever be released. I think Kevin Costner is a fantastic actor and I appreciate his work, but this could have been a  whole lot better.   I'm Jeff Roman. 1/5

Whistle (2026)

Image
Whistle is nothing more then your typical Gen Z type of horror movie that's been done before time & time again. I'll give it credit, at least the characters weren't annoying with their Gen Z dialogue. I guess at my old age, teenagers make me cringe when they speak. The special effects on the death scenes were pretty awesome. A mix of practical & CGI. But I'm more of a practical effects kind of guy. Overall, Whistle adds nothing new to the genre. It's been done before and pretty forgettable. I'm Jeff Roman. 2 1/2/5

Do Not Enter (2026)

Image
The other day I was scrolling through my streaming services and I was thinking to myself, "I hadn't seen any horror movies lately about explorers trapped in a building by some sort of monster trying to survive". Do Not Enter scratched that itch for me, though my only complaint is that the film was a little too dark and hard to see in spots. But overall, Do Not Enter is cheesy and fun. I'm Jeff Roman. 3/5

Delivery Run (2025)

Image
The premise alone may sound cheesy, but Delivery Run I found to be a rather good movie. It's different and dare say something original for a change. It's not a sequel, prequel, or remake. It's an original horror movie. Delivery Run is cheesy, but I gave it a chance and quite liked it. Overall, check it out. I'm Jeff Roman. 3/5

Buried Alive (1990)

Image
I've despised Universal on many things. For starters, the studio interference on Phantasm 2 which makes me think they have some sort of snobbish view on horror films and releasing Buried Alive on TV instead of theaters. I believe Buried Alive should have been a theatrical release as it's really good. Releasing it onto television opens all doors to restrictions. I guess Universal know more then us. But I know more about horror films & what people want compared to these Hollywood studios. Anyway, that's a subject for another time. Buried Alive is a great little thriller that's got enough energy to make you enjoy it. Everything from script, acting, pacing is nothing short of perfection. Tim Matheson is likeable as always. I don't know what it is, but every time I see him on screen, he's just got that buddy quality where he'd hit you up for a beer afterwards and Jennifer Jason Leigh, I've seen some of her work and she does a great job as the villain. Pretty Lethal (2026)

Image
Pretty Lethal has a farfetched premise that the action in the flick makes it a lot of fun. It could have gone so many ways but it's so over the top, that the action sequences made me chuckle. The script is dumb, but going into this I knew what to expect. Acting is pretty decent for the most part and pacing is pretty good. Overall, Pretty Lethal is nothing more then a turn your brain off type of film to enjoy. I'm Jeff Roman. 3/5
