Chato's Land (1972)

Image
Growing up I was raised into watching older films. People my age would dismiss them as "old & outdated". But there's something truly special about watching films from a different time.  They don't rely on CGI or show off their massive budget. They do a concise story. Movies like Chato's Land & Death Wish have content that a lot of people would find offensive and or racist and I say, who cares. I'm no racist, I don't have a mean bone in my body. I've never been in a fight. What I believe we as a society should do is show people films and explain how far we have come along and how we can improve. Banning and censoring films because of outdated content is covering up the past and that's a dangerous way of thinking. Enough of my political rant. Chato's Land is in my opinion, a very good Charles Bronson film. I rank it up there with Death Wish & Mr. Majestyk as his best work. He doesn't speak more then 15 lines in the entire film, bu...

Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995)

Image
Under Siege 2: Dark Territory is just as cheesy as Under Siege. Filled with bad fight scenes and probably the most ludicrous dialogue of all time. One thing's for certain, Seagal's acting skills still haven't improved as he just mumbles away and is devoid of any emotion. Like the first film, the script is cheesy and bad. The acting just as bad. Pacing is good. I love Seagal's films just for the fight scenes because I can just sit back and laugh knowing how bad they are in terms of the choreography. All in all, I may riff on sequels from time to time, but I'll make an exception to this and say that Under Siege 2 is the best sequel of all time... Not! I'm Jeff Roman. 2/5

Under Siege (1992)

Image
Above The Law, Hard To Kill, Marked For Death, & Under Siege are in my opinion, classic action flicks from the early days of Steven Seagal. They're cheesy and bad. But they are a lot of fun. Sure, he plays the same type of character in all his films, but you can't help but laugh at his terrible acting. Under Siege is a fun bad flick where we get to see Seagal do what he does best, fight bad guys on a submarine. The script is typical of what you'd expect from him. Acting is good on everyone except Seagal who couldn't act out of a wet paper bag. Pacing is pretty good. Overall, Under Siege is by no means a great film, it's a great bad film. I'm Jeff Roman. 3/5

Send Help (2026)

Image
It's been a very very long time since I've seen a film directed by Sam Raimi. Being a huge Evil Dead fan, Send Help is definitely a return to form. When I first heard about Send Help, I was truly excited about checking it out and after last night's viewing, it exceeded my expectations. Everything is good from script to acting to pacing. It wouldn't be a Sam Raimi movie if we didn't get any gross out gore gags and his 73' Oldsmobile.  All in all, Send Help is a fun flick and I hope I never get stuck on a deserted island. I'm Jeff Roman. 3/5

A Better Tomorrow 3: Love & Death in Saigon (1989)

Image
A Better Tomorrow 3: Love & Death in Saigon is a decent follow-up to the first two movies in the series. This installment isn't as crazy violent as the last two, but it does have enough action to satisfy this action guy. The only thing that A Better Tomorrow 3 suffers from is it's pacing. Despite a lackluster script, A Better Tomorrow 3 has issues with pacing which deterred my enjoyment. Don't get me wrong, the action sequences are pretty good along with it's acting, but what holds it back is the pacing. Overall, A Better Tomorrow 2 ended the series perfectly and I still have yet to check the newly discovered workprint of the movie. A Better Tomorrow 3 was not needed at all. I'm Jeff Roman. 2/5

Bodycam (2026)

Image
The Found Footage genre is hit or miss. They usually are the same type of the film and they always end the same. Bodycam tries to be different but it's actually pretty good. It's quite interesting when the genre strays away from paranormal and tries to do something outside the box. Bodycam is pretty cool and was a lot of fun. The script has a bit more oomph to it whereas a lot of these films don't have a strong enough script. Acting is pretty good along with it's pacing. Overall, I always support Canadian content when I can and Bodycam is one of the good Found Footage of the year. I'm Jeff Roman. 3/5

Dolly (2026)

Image
Dolly is a film that sounds rather interesting on paper. But it tries way too hard to be taken seriously as a slasher as there are sequences that I found quite humorous. As I was reading into Dolly, I heard rumblings about spawning a franchise and this brings up red flags for me. First off, not everything needs a franchise and second, less is more. I don't need everything to be explained to me the audience goer, I like to think about a film and give my opinion on it whether it's true or not. The script for Dolly really aims for shock & gross out sequences which as I said is more funny to me than shock. The acting is okay. If it wasn't for Sean William Scott appearing in this film, I probably would have passed. Pacing on Dolly is decent. It spends too much time trying to gross the audience then pick up it's story. Overall, Dolly is no Jason and is definitely no Freddy Kreuger. I'll give it props for it being something slightly different. But a sequel is not need...

Scream 7 (2026)

Image
Scream 7 is in my opinion the better film in the franchise. After watching this movie, I believe that this should have been Scream 4 as it would have been perfect start to a new trilogy which I think this is what they intend to do with 7. My main concern with Scream 7 was the writing in the second half. Despite them being Hollywood slasher films, the Scream movies have always had good writing with the occasional hiccup here & there. The first half I think is set up pretty well writing wise. When we get to the second half and killer reveal, I feel that is where the writing runs into issues. The killer reveal is probably the most boring & uninteresting motive. It doesn't scream excitement for me. Acting is pretty good and like the first film, the pacing is pretty strong. If they do decide to do an 8th film, I think they should improve on the writing and the killer's motive that way I can get behind the next one. Overall, Scream 7 is a good sequel, but I think this should ...

NFT: Cursed Images (2026)

Image
I'm not familiar with NFTS, Bitcoin, or any form of digital currency. But I am familiar with horror movies and NFT: Cursed Images is a fun little British indie slasher flick that runs only 73 minutes and in all that time, I can tell you I learned absolutely nothing about Bitcoin or digital currency. I love my paper money. I did learn that the script for NFT: Cursed Images wasn't bad, acting was mediocre and pacing a little slow, but not too slow. Overall, NFT: Cursed Images may not jump start your career in digital money. But it will jump start anyone looking to get into indie horror. I'm Jeff Roman. 2/5

The Hermit (2026)

Image
The Hermit is classified as a horror film. I classify it as a comedy because of the acting. The acting in the film is complete trash that to call The Hermit a horror movie is an insult to the word "horror". That being said, The Hermit is nothing more then cookie cutter fodder. Whatever script there was for this film was wasted by the acting and I feel more bad for Lou Ferrigno associating himself with this. I like a good slasher every now & then and I know what to expect going into them, but I just can't see why slashers today can't take a look at the stuff made in the 80's and see how they work. I'm Jeff Roman. 2/5

Scream 6 (2023)

Image
The sin that Scream 6 made was the lack of Neve Campbell. I truly believe that she's the heart of this franchise  and makes each film watchable. Even though I've made my stance on the sequels many times. You get invested into a character that it makes the films stand out. With that said, Scream 6 is slightly better then 5. I can appreciate them trying something a little different. The script is better then the last one. Acting is alright, not great and pacing is decent. I will give it points though for not becoming another Jason Takes Manhattan where the majority of that Friday sequel we don't get to New York until the second half of the film. Overall, is Scream 6 a good movie, no. But I will give it props for doing something different. I'm Jeff Roman. 3/5

War Machine (2026)

Image
I can enjoy a Netflix movie every now & then. Out for a week and then forgotten about the next. That seems to be the weekly thing about Netflix. War Machine is a movie that tries to be another variation of Predator and doesn't come close. You would think that a film like War Machine would be action packed and a lot of fun. In hindsight it is, but, it's let down by some pacing issues. The script for War Machine is jam packed with the usual Sci-Fi cliches which if I'm being honest, is what I expected with this. The acting is alright. Usually films like this will never have great acting. It's all about the action. The biggest crime this film has is it's pacing. I expected War Machine to be a decent fun action movie. But I was let down by it's pacing. Perhaps a tighter script was needed. But I find that Netflix doesn't care about quality. It's all about putting asses in couches and streaming numbers. Overall, War Machine had some good ideas, but was exec...

Scream 5 (2022)

Image
I said after Scream 3, what more can be done with the franchise as I feel that it served a proper closure to the series. Then came Scream 4, which while great, I felt was not needed. Now comes Scream 5 which is again, the start of a new trilogy and no matter what I say, they'll continue to make them as long as the audience keeps showing up and the money continues to pile up. I will say though, the killer reveal is pretty funny but kind of a dumb motive if you ask me. Overall, Scream 5 is a decent start to the trilogy, but I still feel they should have stopped at 3. I'm Jeff Roman. 2 1/2/5

Scream 4 (2011)

Image
After the conclusion of Scream 3. I thought to myself, what else could be done with the series should they decide to a part 4. 11 years later, Scream 4 was released and was intended to start a new trilogy of movies but never happened. Scream 4 is not a bad sequel. I just think it wasn't needed after 3. The script isn't bad, typical slasher cliches. Acting is pretty good for the most part along with pacing. What I enjoy about this franchise is the horror movie rules. I personally agree with some of them, but others I don't. The horror nerd in me says that Scream 4 is a fun sequel, but old me says that Scream 4 wasn't needed and 3 is the proper conclusion. I'm Jeff Roman. 3/5

Scream 3 (2000)

Image
If you remember the events of the Columbine high school massacre back in 1999, it was mainly the reason as to why Scream 3's script was watered down to what we got today. The government tried to pressure Hollywood into not making violent movies as they believe they are the cause for people committing these atrocities. I'm of the opinion that is not the case. There are people who suffer from mental health issues who truly need help and to blame it on violent movies is just an excuse. I've seen many over the years and I'm no violent person nor would I ever hurt anybody. I don't mean to trail off but going back to Scream 3.  Would it's original script have been a better movie had it been filmed? Probably not. I truly believe that it would not have had a good conclusion and we would have seen a 4th movie soon after. I think that Scream 3 is or was a decent conclusion to the series and it should have ended here. The new script is alright. It's funny in parts, but...

Scream 2 (1997)

Image
The success of the original Scream film in 1996 immediately called for a sequel that came out the following year. Honestly, I think one movie would have been perfect as is, but Hollywood never listens nor cares what the people want. Scream 2 is a fun follow-up to the original movie with brutal kills, a crazy villain, and a bad rendition of The Partridge Family's I Think I love you thanks to Jerry O'Connell. The script is good, strong like the first film. Acting is decent, slashers are not known for good acting. Pacing like the original is pretty good and still strong as ever. Overall, Scream 2 is fun, but not as perfect as the original. I'm Jeff Roman. 3/5

Toy Soldiers (1991)

Image
Picture this, A Die Hard knock-off with a teenage John McClane who instead of a cop, he's a troubled teenager who's been kicked out of three prep school and battles terrorists. The plot may sound interesting on paper but Toy Soldiers is a little bit of a let down in terms of pacing. The script is fair but it's let down by pacing issues. Acting is okay for the most part. With Toy Soldiers, I was expecting a full on Die Hard knock-off, instead I got a mixed paced Die Hard where the action against the baddies takes place near the end of the flick. If the script & pacing were tightened up a little better then Toy Soldiers would have a little more oomph to it. To me, it's just average. I'm Jeff Roman. 2/5

Terminal Rush (1996)

Image
I'm a huge fan of Die Hard. The film is so popular amongst action fans that there's even a genre devoted to copying the Die Hard plot and most of those movies are from the DTV (Direct to Video) era of the 1990's. Terminal Rush is indeed a Die Hard rip-off with bad acting, a ludicrous script, but awesome fight sequences that made me smile. I have nothing against Don the Dragon Wilson. I think he's one of the cool DTV stars of the 90's with his fight scene and I've seen a bunch of his movies. They're cheesy but my god, the man can't act. If it wasn't for his fight scenes, I wouldn't even be watching him. I've seen my fair share of Die Hard knock-offs and while the scripts are average, it's the fight sequences that I love. Nothing but a 90's fight scene in a bar to get me smiling. Terminal Rush is crapstastic, but fun. I'm Jeff Roman. 2/5

Scream (1996)

Image
In 1989, the slasher genre was running out of steam. Friday the 13th came out with it's 8th film. Nightmare on Elm Street had come out with it's 5th film and Halloween also had it's 5th film released along with other b-movie slashers. It was clear then, it was over and audiences entering the 1990's wanted something different. It wasn't until 1996, when Wes Craven rebooted the slasher genre with Scream. This movie to quote it literally, "is such a scream". I've always loved the film as it brings back a ton of nostalgia from growing up as a child of the 90's.The script is good, probably one of Wes's best next to The Serpent & the Rainbow. The acting I don't usually care for in slashers but in Scream, it's pretty good and for a slasher, the pacing is very fast paced. I'm one of those guys that just because it did well didn't mean we needed a sequel and Hollywood doesn't care for my opinion so I say, onto the sequels. I...

Mercy (2026)

Image
Mercy is a pretty entertaining 90 minute movie which begs the question. Is A.I. good or bad? I think if used properly, then maybe it'll be beneficial to society. If used improperly, then it'll lead to a breakdown. But that's a discussion for another time. Mercy is a very good film with a strong script, decent acting, and fast pacing. In fact, it reminded me of Minority Report, a film I haven't seen yet, but I plan to in the future. I'm Jeff Roman. 3/5
