I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

After 1989, the slasher film genre had run it's course. The box office receipts were dry and no one was interested in them anymore. 1993 saw the release of Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday from New Line Cinema and that bombed at the box office, but later on got a cult following and in 1995, Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers was released and that also bombed at the box office. The Producer's cut of the film is an overall better version of the film, but that's a story for another time. It was until 1996 when Wes Craven revitalized the slasher film with Scream  which resulted in huge success in theaters and on home video that the slasher craze was reborn. So, right away, studios were looking to cash in on the craze again and one of the first to show up was I Know What You Did Last Summer. You can compare Scream to I Know What You Did Last Summer whereas yes, they are slashers but they're fun films. Sure, it has it's moments of cheese, but every slasher film has an aroma of cheese. I should know as I've seen my fair share. I sometimes wish I was a teenager in the 1990's as I really love the decade for what it was. As a 7 year kid at the time, I was playing a lot of horror games like Resident Evil on the original PlayStation and discovering the world of horror thanks to my dad's VHS collection. I never once thought that I would be collecting horror movies and doing commentary like this to show off why I love movies and the effect it has on me. I'm going off on a nostalgia tangent here. I love this film, I had a lot of fun with it and I think it's one of the good slashers to come out of the 90's resurgence. With the release of the upcoming 3rd film in the series, you can sure bet, I'll be watching the sequel and for the first time ever, the direct to video sequel or spin-off if you prefer to call it.
